Project Spark Education Campaign
Project Spark: Transforming Education for Underprivileged Students
Asha Jyothi has taken a great stride in the field of education with their innovative program, Project Spark. The primary objective of this initiative is to elevate the academic achievement of underprivileged students by immersing them in science topics during the early stages of their educational journey. By introducing concepts and subjects that go beyond the standard curriculum, Project Spark aims to empower these students to ask thought-provoking questions and reach new heights of excellence.
Overseeing the project is Rama Gundapaneni, who operates from USA, while coordination in India is handled by Nani Ch Jagadesh. Together, they ensure the smooth execution of Project Spark and uphold its mission to augment the educational experience of the beneficiaries.
In the academic year 2022-2023, the groundwork for Project Spark was meticulously laid. Initially, twelve students from the Generation Yuvaa hostel—a facility that provides schooling and shelter for underprivileged children—were carefully selected to participate in the program. These students, ranging from grades 6 to 8, embarked on their transformative journey with Project Spark.
To equip the students with the necessary tools, each of them was provided with a laptop. They received training in typing skills through the use of typing.com. Additionally, all students were given their own Gmail accounts to facilitate easy submission of assignments after each science lesson. Furthermore, they were introduced to Khanmigo, an AI tool based on the powerful GPT-4 architecture from Khan Academy, as well as ChatGPT, thereby enhancing their learning experience.
The success of Project Spark heavily relies on the guidance of mentors located in the USA and India. While mentors in the USA selflessly volunteer their time, mentors in India offer their services in exchange for compensation. To ensure the program’s sustainability, efforts are underway to raise funds to cover the expenses associated with these invaluable mentors.
Looking ahead to the academic year 2023-2024, Project Spark has ambitious plans to expand its reach. Providing more laptops to the students will facilitate their timely completion of assignments. Moreover, the program aims to extend its influence to multiple schools, with the goal of appointing a dedicated full-time mentor to efficiently oversee operations in India.
Through Project Spark, Asha Jyothi aims to create a brighter future for underprivileged students, empowering them with knowledge and skills that will foster their personal growth and academic success.
Estimates cost of operations for 2023–2024 : $10,000
